Our Frequently Asked Questions

Here are all of the answers to your most common questions around thermal transfer ribbons :

A: These terms refer to the ink formulation on the ribbon. Wax ribbons are the most common and cost-effective, ideal for printing on paper labels. They produce clear prints but have the least resistance to scratching or heat (prints can smudge under rough handling or high temperatures). Wax-resin ribbons are a blend that offers medium durability. They create crisper, more smudge-resistant prints than wax alone and work well on coated paper and some synthetics – a good choice when you need added durability against moisture or abrasion. Resin ribbons provide the highest durability. They’re used on synthetic labels (like polypropylene or polyester) and for applications where prints must withstand harsh conditions (chemical exposure, extreme temperatures, heavy abrasion). Resin prints are very resistant to smearing or fading. In short: use wax for standard applications on paper where high durability isn’t needed, wax-resin for a balance of durability and cost, and resin for the toughest jobs requiring maximum longevity. We’re happy to advise which is best for your needs.

A: Yes. We supply ribbons for virtually all thermal transfer label printers on the market. We provide ribbons in the correct width, length, and core size to fit your specific printer model – whether it’s a Zebra desktop printer, a SATO industrial printer, a TSC, Citizen, Honeywell, Datamax, or any other brand. We have ribbons for both flat-head printers (the most common type) and near-edge printers (used in some high-speed coders). Simply let us know your printer make and model (or the ribbon part number you currently use), and we’ll supply a compatible ribbon. Our ribbons meet or exceed OEM specifications, so using them will feel no different than using the manufacturer’s own ribbons – expect the same fit and print quality, often at a more economical cost.

A: We carry thermal transfer ribbons in a wide range of widths, lengths, and core sizes. For width, we have everything from narrow ribbons (under 50mm) for small labels up to wide ribbons (over 200mm) for large format printing – and many sizes in between (e.g. 110mm which is common for shipping labels). Ribbon lengths vary: we supply short rolls (like 74m or 91m) for desktop printers, standard rolls (300m, 450m) for industrial printers, and even extra-long rolls (600m+) for specialized applications, depending on what your printer can handle. Core diameters (like 0.5 inch for desktop, 1 inch for industrial) are matched to your machine. In short, whatever ribbon size your printer requires, we either stock it or can cut it to size. If you have an unusual size requirement, we can accommodate that as well – just ask. We’ll make sure you get the ribbon dimensions that fit your equipment perfectly.

A: Black is by far the most common ribbon colour (it provides the highest contrast and is standard for barcodes). However, we can indeed supply coloured thermal transfer ribbons if you need them. We have ribbons in colours such as red, blue, green, white, and more. Coloured ribbons are often used for special purposes – for instance, a white or light-colour ribbon to print on a dark label, or colour-coding labels by printing certain info in a specific colour. Availability of colours can depend on the ribbon type (wax, wax-resin, resin). Wax and wax-resin ribbons have the most colour options, while resin ribbons are mostly limited to black (with a few exceptions like blue or red resin in some cases). If you have a particular colour requirement, let us know. We either have it in stock or can source it. Typically, there may be a slightly longer lead time for uncommon colours, but we will confirm that with you. In summary, you’re not limited to black – we’ll help you find the right colour ribbon for your application.

A: We pride ourselves on fast delivery. For ribbons that we stock (which includes most common sizes and types), we offer next-day delivery within the UK for orders placed by our standard cut-off time. We maintain a large inventory of popular wax, wax-resin, and resin ribbons so that orders can be dispatched immediately. If you need a less common ribbon size or a special formulation that we don’t currently stock, we can still usually get it to you quickly – often within a few days. We also offer the option of scheduled deliveries or holding a consignment of your ribbons in our stock if you have a continuous high-volume need. That way, you can call them off as needed and we’ll deliver in an agreed timeframe. Our goal is to ensure you’re never waiting long for ribbons. In practice, most of our customers receive their ribbon orders in one or two days.
