Service information
Packaging lines demand coding ribbons that deliver clear prints at high speeds. Our coding ribbons are formulated specifically for thermal transfer coding printers, ensuring crisp, legible date codes, batch numbers, and barcodes on flexible packaging materials.
They adhere well to films and foils, so codes resist smudging or rubbing off. We offer wax-resin and resin coding ribbon formulations to match your durability needs, and carry all common ribbon sizes to fit near-edge and other popular coding machines.
You can rely on our ribbons to perform consistently under pressure. Their durable film backing and quality ink coating minimize ribbon breaks and print defects, keeping production smooth. We stock popular coding ribbons for immediate dispatch (often with next-day delivery), and can quickly supply any special sizes or grades you need.
Not sure which ribbon is best for your packaging? We’re happy to advise. We also offer longer-length rolls and work with eco-conscious suppliers to reduce waste. With Kelgray’s coding ribbons, you get reliable code quality on every package and a support team dedicated to your efficiency.
Why Coding Ribbons from Kelgray?
Clear codes, no errors:
Clear, reliable codes are critical for product traceability. Our high-quality coding ribbons produce sharp, smudge-proof date and batch codes on packaging, preventing scanning errors and ensuring vital information stays intact.
Built for speed:
Packaging lines can’t afford ribbon breaks or smudges. Our coding ribbons are engineered for durability – no snapping and consistent ink transfer – keeping your production running smoothly without stops.
Right ribbon for every material:
Different packaging materials need the right ribbon. We provide both wax-resin and resin options, and expert guidance to ensure you use a ribbon that adheres and delivers lasting code quality.
Always in stock:
Running out of coding ribbon halts production. We maintain ample stock and fast delivery, so you always have ribbon. We also offer longer rolls to reduce changeovers and minimise waste.

Our Frequently Asked Questions
Here are all of the answers to your most common questions around coding Ribbons :
A: Coding ribbons (also known as thermal transfer overprinter ribbons or TTO ribbons) are used in packaging-line printers that add variable information directly onto packaging. These machines print details like expiration dates, batch/lot numbers, production codes, or small barcodes on materials such as plastic film, foil wrappers, pouches, or product packaging as it moves through the line. A coding ribbon works much like a standard thermal transfer ribbon in a label printer, but it is formulated for high-speed, intermittent printing. The ribbon’s ink is transferred onto the packaging when the coder’s printhead applies heat and pressure, typically in short bursts to print date codes on each item or package. Coding ribbons are designed to produce clear, durable codes at these high speeds and to adhere to flexible packaging surfaces without smudging. In summary, they ensure every product package receives the required date or lot code in a clean, legible way during production.
A: Our coding ribbons are compatible with virtually all major thermal transfer coding machines used in packaging. We supply ribbons for equipment from leading manufacturers such as Markem-Imaje (SmartDate series coders), Videojet (DataFlex and others), Domino, Linx, ICE (Interactive Coding Equipment), Avery Dennison, and more. We can provide ribbons for both near-edge coders (commonly used in high-speed packaging lines) and any flat-head thermal coders if applicable. When you order, we will ensure you get the correct width, length, and core size ribbon that fits your specific machine model. If you’re unsure or don’t see your machine listed, just let us know the make and model – chances are we have a ribbon solution for it. We have yet to encounter a coding printer we couldn’t supply ribbons for, and we’ll double-check compatibility so that the ribbons you receive work seamlessly with your equipment.
A: We offer coding ribbons in all the common sizes and types for packaging coders. Typically, coding ribbon widths range from about 20mm up to 60mm or more, depending on the coder and the size of the code area on your packaging. We stock a wide range of widths to match various machines – from narrow ribbons for small date codes to wider ribbons for larger print areas. Ribbon lengths are usually defined by the coder model (often around 600m to 900m for many TTO machines, but it varies). We supply the standard length rolls for each printer to ensure proper fit (and in some cases, we can provide longer rolls if your machine can take them, to reduce how often you need to change ribbons). In terms of types, we provide both wax-resin coding ribbons (the common choice for most packaging, balancing excellent print quality and good durability) and resin coding ribbons (used when you need extra durability – for example, if codes must resist abrasion, chemicals, or high temperatures on the packaging). If you need a special grade (say, an ultra-heat-resistant ribbon for a particular application), we can source that too. Whatever size or type your coding printer requires, we either have it or can get it for you quickly.
A: No – when you use the appropriate type of coding ribbon for your packaging material, the printed codes should be very resistant to smudging or rubbing off under normal conditions. Our coding ribbons are formulated to bond the ink firmly onto the packaging film. For most common applications (printing date/batch codes on typical food packaging films, wrappers, bags, etc.), a wax-resin coding ribbon will produce crisp, smudge-resistant codes that can withstand typical handling and distribution without issue. If your packages will face more challenging conditions – for instance, a lot of abrasion, significant moisture, refrigeration/freezing, or exposure to chemicals – then we would recommend using a resin coding ribbon. Resin ribbons yield prints with maximum durability that won’t easily scratch off or smear, even on hard-to-mark surfaces like shiny foils or when exposed to harsh conditions. The key is matching the ribbon to the material and environment: we can help advise on the best choice. In general, once a code is printed with our ribbons, it remains clear and intact for the life of the product under normal usage.
A: We understand that a packaging line can’t wait around for consumables, so we strive for very fast delivery. For all standard coding ribbon sizes and grades that we stock (which covers most common machines and applications), we offer next-day delivery within the UK for orders placed by our usual cut-off time. We keep ample inventory of popular coding ribbons precisely so that we can ship immediately when you need them. If your ribbon is a less common size or a special formulation we don’t have on the shelf, we can typically source or produce it quickly – often dispatching within a few days. We also offer services like scheduled deliveries or blanket orders: for example, if you know you’ll use a certain number of ribbons per month, we can set up a standing arrangement to deliver that quantity on a regular schedule. In essence, standard items arrive by the next working day, and even special items are delivered with minimal lead time. Our goal is that you never have to pause production waiting for ribbons.
