Box & Case Labelling

Service information

Kelgray’s print-and-apply systems label cartons with precision and speed, ideal for high-volume operations. The machine prints each label (e.g. shipping address, barcodes, product IDs) and applies it in the correct position on the box consistently.

You can label any side(s) of the carton as needed – for instance, use a corner-wrap label to cover both the front and side for two-angle visibility. This ensures your boxes meet customer labeling requirements and barcodes can be scanned easily.

Typically installed along your conveyor, the box labeller prints and applies labels in real time as each carton passes. This significantly speeds up dispatch: the system can label dozens of boxes per minute automatically.

We can also integrate packing slip printing/insertion if you need documents added to the shipment. Our box labellers handle a range of carton sizes (with adjustable guides or automated height adjustment) and are built for 24/7 operation. Kelgray configures each solution to fit your workflow, eliminating bottlenecks and mislabels in your case packing.

Our Frequently Asked Questions

Here are all of the answers to your most common questions around box & case labelling:

A: Kelgray offers various applicator configurations to hit whatever side is needed. For example, a front/side corner-wrap applicator can apply one label that wraps around from the front to the side of a box (covering two sides at once). We also have setups with multiple applicator heads so you can put separate labels on, say, the top and side in one pass. The choice depends on your requirements. Our systems can be configured for front-only, side-only, dual-sided (opposite sides), adjacent sides (corner wrap), or even top & bottom labelling. We will configure the machinery (and conveyor aids like turners or bump wheels) so that each carton is presented correctly to receive labels on the desired sides. This flexibility means the solution can meet carrier requirements and ensure barcodes are visible from the needed angles.

A: Yes – our case labelling systems are built to accommodate a range of carton sizes. They often include adjustable guides and sensor arrays that detect the box position. For height differences, we can provide an applicator on a motorized pillar that moves up or down to the right height for each box. For width/depth differences, the label application can be done via a swing arm or tamp that reaches out to the box’s surface wherever it is. We’ll program multiple box size “recipes” if needed, so the system automatically adjusts when a different box comes down the line (or we integrate upstream dimension scanning to adjust on-the-fly). If your boxes vary greatly, we might add a secondary applicator or a sliding mechanism to cover the full range. In summary, a well-designed Kelgray labeller can adapt to various case dimensions in one system.

A: Our print-and-apply labellers can dynamically print the correct label for each carton based on data from your system. Typically, before labelling, we interface with your Warehouse Management or Order Management System. For example, a barcode scanner might scan the carton or tote and tell our printer what shipment it is – then the printer fetches the appropriate carrier label or product label template and prints it on the fly. This way, mixed orders on the line get their unique labels without manual sorting. Kelgray’s software can store many label formats (for different carriers, customers, etc.) and select the right one per box. So if one carton is going to the UK and the next to Europe, each can get the appropriate label in sequence. The system ensures the label matches the carton’s contents or destination as provided by your database, eliminating mix-ups.

A: While our box labelling systems often integrate with conveyors for fully automatic flow, we also offer semi-automatic setups if needed. For example, an operator could present a box to a station and trigger the labelling via a foot pedal or sensor – the machine would then print/apply the label. However, for high volumes, a conveyor is recommended to transport boxes through the labelling station consistently. Kelgray can provide suitable conveyor sections with built-in controls to regulate spacing and orientation of boxes for labelling. In short, we can supply a turnkey solution including a conveyor if you don’t already have one. The system can also be used off-line with an operator, but the highest efficiency is gained when it’s inline, automatically labelling each box as it moves along.
